The Reading Program at Korn School
girl reading Korn is at the forefront of progressive reading instruction. Reading is taught using a variety of methods such as guided reading in small groups, whole-class lessons, shared reading and individualized reading instruction. Decoding and phonics are taught through spelling and individualized instruction is given where needed. In third and fourth grade, the emphasis in reading shifts towards interpreting text and more importance is placed on increasing comprehension and fluency. The students work with a variety of genres, particularly non-fiction and become more skilled in using text to support their learning. The main focus is to develop critical thinkers, who become used to reading through discussion and written response. At this time reading text and writing about it become integrated.
