Below are some of the "special events" at Korn School....

Stepping Up to Third Grade

Stepping up to third grade from second grade can be a very exciting experience for young students. Closing this gap between Brewster and Korn is a task for both teachers and administrators in Regional District 13. Each year at Korn School the transition activities and programs are provided for students that create a warm and nurturing environment for students in the Contemporary Program. These activities include Shakesperience plays, writing shares, book partners, and question/answer sessions. The final transition activity is Field Day in June. Here all students K-4 come to the Korn School compound for an agenda full of fun and games. All these activities are designed to put "at ease" students concerns about coming to a new school in the fall. "Meet the Teacher" is a day designed just before the opening day of school. Its purpose is for students to meet and greet their new teacher. It's great to hear someone say, "I remember you, and I came to your classroom last year!"

Recognizing warm and friendly smiles makes our task much easier — preparing students to be successful life-long learners!

Throughout the school year you will find third graders expanding their horizons in many exciting venues. A trip back in time to the era of the Woodland and Plains Indians is a highlight of their Native American unit of study when they visit Bushy Hill Nature Center in Ivoryton, CT. Hands on science activities, including workshops on Matter, at the Children’s Museum in West Hartford, CT provide exciting opportunities for our budding scientists. A visit to the New Britain Museum of Art helps students gain new perspectives as they view the works of world-renowned artists. Closer to home students take tours of their hometowns of Durham and Middlefield. They explore one of the oldest cemeteries in New England and learn about the first settlers to their towns. Hiking on trails in Middletown and on Korn School’s own Wildwood Trail helps tune students' ears and eyes to the wonder of nature around us. Of course, no third grade year would be complete without the much-anticipated visit from Julie Collier and her magnificent Birds of Prey. Regardless of the season third graders at Korn School are always “on the move”.
