teepee Social Studies in Third Grade

How did the North Americans live? Who were the explorers that sailed the dangerous Atlantic looking for riches? Where did the communities of Middlefield and Durham begin? These are just some of the questions answered during Social Studies in third grade.

We begin the year learning about Native Americans. We study their connections to the earth, their homes and villages, and how they lived. A visit to Bushy Hill Nature Center allows us to venture inside real wigwams and teepees!

Once third graders have learned all about the Native Americans, we transition to learning about Explorers. We learn who they were, what kind of people they were, and their effect on the lands and the people they encountered in their travels.

Our final unit of study brings us quite close to home. We study community. After tours of both Durham and Middlefield, students begin to realize that community is all around and it affects almost everything we do.

Third grade Social Studies sure is something to look forward to!
