reading Reading in Third Grade

The ability to read is key to success in school. It is the foundation of all school-based learning. Before entering third grade students spend most of their reading time learning to decode our written language. With the start of third grade the emphasis shifts and expands to include greater opportunities to comprehend more complex text. Reading activities are embedded into every portion of the school day. Students at Korn Elementary School engage in reading a wide variety of genres in teacher-led guided reading groups, student-led literature circles, and shared reading experiences. Class Read Alouds, Readers’ Theater, plays, skits and poetry recitations all play a vital role in our school’s commitment to the lifelong enjoyment of reading.
