Volunteer/Artist

Brewster has many volunteers who come to work with students and staff. Our volunteers are talented in a variety of ways. Some volunteers share their knowledge of their culture, some come with computer skills, some volunteers just enjoy reading to the students, and some help the teacher by organizing group activities. One of our valued volunteers is Kerry Sheldon who comes to Brewster School to help in the art room with art teacher, Ruth Beames. Her talent is egg decorating and she brings a variety of eggs that she has scratched and painted. Students learn the technique and try this age old activity for themselves. Their work is hanging in the art room.

Meteorologist

John Carroll came to Brewster School in March to do a presentation for second graders who study weather. Being a weatherman for a local television station, he is very aware of the changing New England weather. Students were excited to ask him questions about weather and his role as a meteorologist. A special thank you to the BKPTA for arranging his visit.

Visiting Author

On April 16, Pat Brisson, the author of several pieces of children's literature, visited Brewster School. She addressed the second graders on writing, editing and illustrating books. She spoke of her experiences on becoming an author and took questions from the inquiring second grade students.

Fire Safety at Brewster School

On September 13, the students had an opportunity to meet members of the Durham and Middlefield Volunteer Fire Departments up close and personal. The students watched the volunteers put on their fire equipment and got a chance to take a look at the fire truck. Fire department members educated the children about fire safety and brought each of them stickers and a pamphlet. A special thanks to Brian Szymaszek, Dave Steel, Bob Figoras, Craig Badanini and Bill Curtis. To view pictures, click on the link below.

Cinco de Mayo

The second graders celebrated Cinco de Mayo to culminate their studies of Mexico. In the morning the students participated in games, learned facts about Mexico and sampled foods from Mexico prepared by many parent volunteers. In the afternoon Fiesta del Norte, a popular Mexican band, performed for the entire school courtesy of the BKPTA.

David Zucker, Poetry In Motion

David Zucker performed Poetry in Motion in front of a captive Brewster audience. His revival of the lost art of performing poetry was part of a special presentation made possible by the BKPTA. He has more than 20 years of experience as an actor, director, playwright, teacher and mime. Mr. Zucker was part of the "kick-off" for Young Authors' Day which will be held on May24.

BKPTA Brings a Storyteller to Brewster

Brewster School first graders were treated to a storytelling session by Candace Wolfe on April 5th. The students were captivated by her stories from around the world. Her animated performance was made possible by the BKPTA. The BKPTA provides many cultural experiences for the students throughout the year. Candace is a favorite among the students here at Brewster!
