A Message from Our Superintendent . . . Susan Viccaro
Superintendent of Schools

November 1, 2007

Dear Students, Parents and Community Members,

The 2007-2008 school year in District 13 promises to be an exciting one with new initiatives. First and foremost the Board of Education has completed a 5 year capital needs plan that will address sorely needed improvements to our buildings and grounds across all six buildings. The first items to be addressed include the track and tennis courts on the Coginchaug campus as well as new roofs for Lyman and Memorial Schools.

Crowding at Memorial and Brewster led to the addition of portable classrooms for both buildings. Memorial also received a much needed technology upgrade with the completion of a 25 station computer lab complete with projector and SMART board.

John Lyman School continues its designation as a HOT school emphasizing arts integration throughout the entire curriculum. Working in conjunction with the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism (CCT) Lyman played host to new teachers interested in applying to become a HOT school. CCT provides funding and professional development for HOT schools designees.

Korn School (along with Brewster) is in its first year of implementing a new math text. It includes a wide range of offerings to meet the needs of diverse learners as well as well as offering homework and enrichment activities. Reports from students, staff and parents are that it’s a hit!

Strong School is increasing its focus on academic enrichment activities this year and is the focus of the Principal’s Advisory Council. Other activities being offered include the Pre Algebra Challenge, The Geographic Society, The Math Club and The Archaeological Club. There is something for everyone at Strong.

Coginchaug Regional High School always has a myriad of activities going on. From sports to clubs and music events, there is always something happening. This year CRHS will play host to the Shoreline Music Festival as well as offering a production of Once Upon a Mattress in the spring. Coginchaug will also be the site of our second annual Community Round Up to be held on Saturday, December 1, 2007.

I hope you have an opportunity to get involved in some aspect of Regional School District 13 where there are great things happening!

Sincerely,

Susan L. Viccaro, Superintendent
